RELIANCE

Prunus persica 'Reliance'

About the Variety: Reliance was developed at the University of New Hampshire and released in 1964, bred specifically for extreme cold hardiness. Its flower buds can survive temperatures well below zero, making it one of the most winter-hardy peaches available. It's a good insurance variety for sites with cold pockets or exposed plantings.

Fruit Description: Medium freestone peaches, nearly all red skin over a yellow background. Flesh is yellow, moderately firm, and juicy. Flavor is decent but generally considered a notch below Redhaven or Contender, valued more for reliability than gourmet quality.

Harvest Window for Cincinnati/Southern Ohio: Mid to Late July

Ripeness Indicators:

  • Background color turns fully yellow

  • Fruit softens and gives to gentle pressure

  • Separates easily from the branch

  • Use within 2-3 days of peak ripeness

Disease Resistance:

  • Not bred for disease resistance

  • Moderate susceptibility to bacterial spot and brown rot

  • Its strength is bud hardiness, not disease tolerance

Best Uses:

  • Fresh eating/Freezing/Canning: general purpose

  • Baking: holds up reasonably in cobblers and pies

How to Share This Fruit: Reliance is a good "insurance tree" story for climate education, explaining why some sites plant extra-hardy varieties as backup against late frost years when other peaches fail to set fruit. Use it in general midsummer harvest events alongside Redhaven.
