PROLIFIC

Asimina triloba 'Prolific'

About the Variety: Prolific is a pawpaw variety selected in Michigan and known for, as the name suggests, heavy fruit production. While individual fruits may not be quite as large as Overleese, Prolific compensates by producing more fruit per tree. It was selected for northern growing conditions and reliability. Prolific represents selection focused on yield and dependability rather than maximum fruit size.

Fruit Description: Medium to large pawpaw fruits (typically 5-8 oz) with greenish-yellow skin. Flesh is bright yellow to orange, smooth, and custard-like with very good flavor - sweet and tropical with classic pawpaw characteristics. Seeds are moderate in number. While not the absolute largest or most intensely flavored, Prolific offers consistently good quality and abundant production.

Harvest Window for Cincinnati/Southern Ohio: Mid-September (typically September 10-25)

Ripeness Indicators:

  • Softens significantly when ripe

  • Skin color lightens toward yellow

  • Sweet tropical aroma develops

  • May drop when fully ripe

  • Brief ripeness window (1-2 days at peak)

  • Can pick slightly underripe and ripen off tree

  • Heavy crops mean lots of fruit ripening simultaneously

Disease Resistance:

  • Excellent - native species with natural resistance

  • Selected for Michigan climate - cold hardy

  • Low maintenance requirements

Best Uses:

  • Fresh eating: Very good for eating fresh

  • Freezing: Excellent for freezing as pulp - abundant crops make preserving important

  • Baking: Good for all baking applications

  • Ice cream/smoothies: Makes good frozen desserts

  • Banana substitute: Works in banana-substitute recipes

  • Storage: Fresh fruit lasts 2-3 days; frozen pulp lasts 6+ months

How to Share This Fruit: Prolific's abundant production makes it perfect for large-scale harvest events and community-wide distribution programs. The heavy crops mean you can serve many people from fewer trees - great for maximizing community benefit. Organize processing parties in mid-September where groups work together to handle the abundant harvest - peeling, seeding, and freezing pulp becomes a social activity. The reliable production makes Prolific excellent for annual pawpaw festivals or consistent community programs where you need dependable fruit every year. Consider "abundance management" workshops teaching people to handle glut harvests through freezing and preservation. The Michigan origin provides opportunity to discuss northern breeding and variety selection for cold climates. Use Prolific to teach about breeding goals - showing how different characteristics (maximum fruit size vs. total yield vs. ease of processing) represent different breeding priorities. The heavy crops also make Prolific good for first-time grower education - demonstrating the potential of native fruit production.
