20TH CENTURY (NIJISSEIKI)
Pyrus pyrifolia '20th Century'
About the Variety: 20th Century (Nijisseiki in Japanese, meaning "20th century") is one of the most famous and widely planted Asian pears worldwide. Developed in Japan in 1898 as a chance seedling, it was named to commemorate the approaching new century. Known for its beautiful smooth golden skin and exceptionally juicy, mild-sweet flavor, it became the standard by which other Asian pears are judged.

Fruit Description: Large round fruit with smooth, clear yellow-green to golden-yellow skin that looks almost polished. Flesh is white, extremely crisp, and extraordinarily juicy - releasing a flood of sweet, refreshing juice when bitten. Flavor is mild-sweet with very low acidity, sometimes described as having hints of pear, apple, and melon. The texture is the classic crisp, crunchy Asian pear experience.

Harvest Window for Cincinnati/Southern Ohio: Late August to Early September (typically August 25 - September 10)

Ripeness Indicators:
-
