HARROW SWEET

Pyrus communis 'Harrow Sweet'

About the Variety: Harrow Sweet is a fire blight-resistant European pear developed by Agriculture Canada's Harrow Research Station and released in 1980. It was bred specifically for disease resistance and cold hardiness, making it ideal for organic orchards in northern climates. Part of the "Harrow" series of pears, it has proven exceptionally reliable in the Great Lakes region and Ohio. Harrow Sweet offers the soft, buttery texture of classic European pears with dramatically improved disease resistance.

Fruit Description: Medium-sized yellow-green pears with smooth skin that develops a golden-yellow color at maturity. Classic pyriform (pear-shaped) form. Flesh is white to cream-colored, very juicy, smooth, and buttery when properly ripened. Flavor is sweet with low acidity - not complex but pleasant and broadly appealing. The texture when perfectly ripe is the classic "melting" European pear experience.

Harvest Window for Cincinnati/Southern Ohio: Late August to Early September (typically August 25 - September 10)

Ripeness Indicators: CRITICAL: European pears must be picked UNRIPE and ripened off the tree. If left to ripen on tree, they become mealy and unpleasant.

  • Pick when: Color begins shifting from green to yellow-green, fruit separates easily with gentle upward lift, slight color change at stem end

  • Don't wait for: Softening on tree, full yellow color, or sweet aroma - these indicate overripe fruit

  • After harvest: Ripen at room temperature for 5-10 days until neck yields to gentle pressure

  • Ripeness test: Press gently near stem - should give slightly like a ripe avocado

Disease Resistance:

  • Highly resistant to fire blight (exceptional for European pear)

  • Moderate resistance to scab

  • Much more reliable than classic pear varieties like Bartlett

Best Uses:

  • Fresh eating: Excellent for eating out-of-hand when properly ripened

  • Canning: Good for home canning

  • Fresh applications: Great for fruit plates and salads

  • Storage: Can be stored for 1-2 months before ripening

  • Not ideal for: Poaching (too soft) or baking (becomes mushy)

How to Share This Fruit: Harrow Sweet requires education-focused distribution because most people don't understand European pear ripening. Never distribute hard, just-picked pears without clear instructions. Instead, organize "pear ripening workshops" in late August where you explain the harvest-then-ripen process, demonstrate proper ripeness testing, and send people home with both unripe pears and printed instructions. Consider a "two-week pear program" - distribute hard pears week one with instructions, then host a tasting party week two where people bring back their ripened fruit to share and discuss results. Excellent for comparison events with Asian pears (ripen on tree) versus European pears (ripen off tree) to teach fundamental fruit science. Set up a "pear ripening station" at the orchard with a basket of rock-hard unripe pears and a basket of perfectly ripe pears so people can feel and smell the difference. The early season timing makes Harrow Sweet perfect for late summer educational events when people are receptive to learning before fall chaos begins.
