HARROW DELIGHT
Pyrus communis 'Harrow Delight'
About the Variety: Harrow Delight is a fire blight-resistant European pear developed by Agriculture Canada's Harrow Research Station and released in 1981 - a sibling to Harrow Sweet from the same breeding program. It offers similar disease resistance but with slightly different flavor characteristics and ripening time. Harrow Delight is part of the "Harrow trio" (Harrow Sweet, Harrow Delight, Harrow Gold) that revolutionized organic pear growing in northern climates.

Fruit Description: Medium-sized yellow pears with smooth skin and classic pear shape. Flesh is creamy white, fine-textured, very juicy, and smooth. Flavor is well-balanced sweet-tart with pleasant pear aromatics - more complex than Harrow Sweet with better acid balance. Texture when properly ripened is buttery and melting with minimal grittiness.

How to Share This Fruit: Harrow Delight works similarly to Harrow Sweet for educational ripening programs in late August and early September. Because its flavor is more balanced and complex than Harrow Sweet, use Harrow Delight for comparative tastings where you showcase how siblings from the same breeding program can have different flavor profiles. Organize "Harrow family" educational events if you have multiple Harrow varieties, teaching people about plant breeding and variety development. The balanced flavor makes Harrow Delight excellent for "gateway pear" programs introducing people to European pears for the first time. Consider preserving workshops where the good acid balance means pears maintain character in canning. The reliable disease resistance and production make Harrow Delight suitable for annual community traditions where consistency matters year after year.
