HARROW CRISP

Pyrus communis 'AC Harrow Crisp'

About the Variety: AC Harrow Crisp is another fire blight-resistant pear from Agriculture Canada's Harrow Research Station, released in 1996. Like Summercrisp from Minnesota, Harrow Crisp was bred to maintain a crisp texture even when ripe - combining the firm, crunchy texture of Asian pears with the flavor profile of European pears. This makes it appealing to people who dislike soft, mushy pears. Harrow Crisp represents the evolution of pear breeding toward texture diversity.

Fruit Description: Medium-sized yellow-green pears with russeting and occasional red blush. Flesh is white, exceptionally crisp and juicy - maintaining firm texture even when fully ripe. Flavor is sweet-tart with good pear aromatics. The crisp texture is similar to an Asian pear but the flavor is distinctly European pear. A unique combination that bridges two pear types.

Harvest Window for Cincinnati/Southern Ohio: Late August to Early September (typically August 25 - September 10)

Ripeness Indicators: More forgiving than soft pears:

  • Pick when: Background yellows, fruit separates easily

  • Brief ripening: Needs only 3-5 days off-tree ripening

  • Maintains crunch: Never becomes fully soft/buttery

  • Less precise timing: More forgiving than soft European pears

  • When ready: Slight neck softening, yellow color, fruity aroma

Disease Resistance:

  • Excellent resistance to fire blight

  • Good general disease resistance

  • Bred specifically for organic growing conditions

Best Uses:

  • Fresh eating: Excellent for people who prefer crisp pears

  • Slicing: Holds shape beautifully for fresh slicing

  • Salads: Perfect for salads where firm texture is desired

  • Storage: Stores well for 2-3 months

  • Versatile: Can be used like Asian pears or European pears depending on application

How to Share This Fruit: AC Harrow Crisp works perfectly for all the same "crisp pear" educational strategies as Summercrisp. Organize side-by-side tastings with soft European pears to demonstrate texture diversity within the same species. The forgiving ripeness timing makes it ideal for beginner harvest events where people are still learning fruit handling. Consider "texture workshop" events where you explore how breeding can modify fundamental fruit characteristics. Excellent for kids' programs where crisp texture is more appealing than soft, drippy pears. The early timing pairs well with Asian pears and summer apples for late summer diversity celebrations. Use AC Harrow Crisp to teach about modern plant breeding goals - showing how breeders respond to consumer preferences and organic growing challenges by creating varieties that wouldn't have existed historically.
